Veteran’s Week with MAVRC at UW-Milwaukee

The week of November 11th, 2013, The Military & Veteran’s Resource Center (MAVRC) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is hosting multiple events to celebrate and recognize the student veterans attending UWM as well as remembering those veterans no longer with us.

Events are open to all UWM students.

Vehicle and Flag Display – Beginning at 8:00am, flags representing each student veteran or service member on campus will be displayed in Spaights Plaza until 4:00pm.  Military vehicles from local Reserve and National Guard units will be on display and open for inside access to them.

“Honoring Our Heroes” – On Monday and Tuesday in the Union Concourse, the Student Veterans of America: UW-Milwaukee Chapter will have a Wall of Honor displaying the names of all service members that gave their lives in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), a video tribute to the service members from Wisconsin that lost their lives in OEF/OIF.  Veteran support organizations will also be on hand to display and educate visitors to the event about prior wars and veteran sacrifices made throughout our nation’s history.

“Serving Those Who Serve” Breakfast – Monday from 8:00am to 10:00am, in the Ballroom-West Wing of the Union, campus leadership and community leaders will serve breakfast to our student, administrative, and faculty veteran population.  County Executive Abele will attend.  Chancellor Lovell and several from his cabinet will serve breakfast for a one-hour shift (8:00am-9:00am and 9:00am-10:00am)  The UWM Veteran’s Advisory Council (VAC) members will welcome and guide guests into the breakfast.

“The Military Experience” – Tuesday afternoon of Veterans Week from 12:00pm-4:00pm at the Pavilion Gym in the Klotsche Center.  Military training activities will be available for students and anyone else with a campus ID to learn about the training experiences of soldiers.  Activities will include pugil sticks/jousting, two obstacle courses, a tug of war, pull-up bar, and other activities.  Additionally, students will have the unique opportunity to try on military gear used by soldiers during training and deployments.  Green Bay Packer’s Marshall Newhouse and Ryan Taylor will be in attendance from 1:00pm-3:00pm. They will joust with a few students and participate in other events.

“Film Showing” – Tuesday afternoon from 3:30pm-8:00pm in the Ballroom – West Wing in the Union, MAVRC will show the powerful documentary “Restrepo” before a facilitated discussion about the experiences of deployed soldiers and how those experiences directly impact their return from combat. This discussion will be facilitated by Miranda Levy, an Army veteran, UWM Alumi, and a recent contestant on the television series, “Project Runway”.  The comedy “Down Periscope” will follow the discussion.  Popcorn and refreshments will be served.

“Cross-Cultural Encounters: Veteran Experiences Overseas” – Wednesday from 12:00pm-1:00pm – in the Union, Room E240, the Center for International Education (CIE) is hosting a discussion and brown bag lunch where veterans can share some of their international and cross-cultural experiences and perspectives. Students and faculty in the department are confirmed attendees. The event is also open to the public.

“Resume Building for Veterans” – Thursday from 12:00pm-2:00pm in MAVRC, the Career Development Center will partner with MAVRC to lead a speed resume development session for student veterans on campus.  Resume reviewers will work with student veterans for 15 minutes to answer questions, provide feedback, and offer to make corrections on resumes.

“First Person Shooter Gaming Event and Tournament” – On Friday from 12:00pm-6:00pm in the Union, Wisconsin Room Lounge, the Student Association, the Eighth Note Coffee Shop, and MAVRC are leading a gaming event open to all students. For $10, students can play a wide selection of video games and create teams to participate in gaming tournaments.  Proceeds from the event will go to a veteran-specific community organization, selected by event participants.  Prizes include three copies of the new Call of Duty: Ghost, gift cards, and free food!
