Veteran’s Week
“Serving Those Who Serve” Breakfast –Monday of Veterans Week from 8:00-10:00 — Ballroom-West Wing.
Campus leadership and community leaders will serve breakfast to our student, administrative, and faculty veteran population. Community representatives include County Executive Abele as well as Chancellor Lovell and several members of his cabinet will serve you breakfast.
Vehicle and Flag Display –Monday of Veterans Week from 8:00-4:00 – Spaights Plaza.
Static display of armored vehicles as well as flags representing each student veteran or service member on campus.
“Honoring our Heroes” –Monday and Tuesday of Veterans Week from 8:00-4:00 — Union Concourse.
The Student Veterans of America: UW-Milwaukee Chapter will have a banner displayed with the names of those who did not return during OEF/OIF, a photo display of UWM student veterans, and a scrolling video of Wisconsin soldiers we lost during OEF/OIF. The American Legion and other veteran organizations will be in attendance.
“The Military Experience” – Tuesday of Veterans Week from 12:00-4:00 – Pavilion Gym.
Military training activities will be available for students and anyone else with a campus ID to learn about the training experiences of soldiers. Activities will include pugil sticks/jousting, two obstacle courses, a tug of war, pull-up bar, and other activities. Additionally, students will have the unique opportunity to try on military gear soldiers use during training and deployments. We have contacted a couple of surplus stores for this and are open to others who may have gear. Green Bay Packer’s Marshall Newhouse and Ryan Taylor will be in attendance, will joust students, and participate in other events.
“Film Showing” –Tuesday of Veterans Week from 3:30-8:00 — Ballroom-West Wing.
MAVRC will show the powerful documentary “Restrepo” before a facilitated discussion about the experiences of deployed soldiers and how those experiences directly impact their return from combat. This discussion will be facilitated by Army veteran Miranda Levy, a UWM Alum, and recent contestant on the hit TV show, “Project Runway”. “Down Periscope” follows the discussion. Free to all and popcorn and refreshments will be served.
“Cross-Cultural Encounters: Veteran Experiences Overseas” –Wednesday of Veterans Week from 12:00-1:00 – Union, Room E240.
The Center for International Education (CIE) is hosting a discussion and brown bag lunch where veterans can share some of their international and cross-cultural experiences and perspectives. Students and faculty in the department are confirmed attendees. The event is also open to the public.
“Resume Building for Veterans” – Thursday of Veterans Week from 12:00-2:00 –MAVRC.
The Career Development Center will partner with MAVRC to lead a speed resume development session for student veterans on campus. Student veterans can come in as a reviewer will work with the veteran for 15 minutes to answer questions, provide feedback, and offer to make corrections on the students’ resumes.
“First Person Shooter Gaming Event and Tournament” – Friday of Veterans Week from 12:00-6:00 –Union, Wisconsin Room Lounge.
The Eighth Note, Northwestern Mutual, and MAVRC are leading a gaming event open to all. For $10, students can play a wide selection of video games and game systems while feasting on sandwiches and pizza. Play the new PlayStation 4! All proceeds, including a $2,000 donation, will go to a veteran’s community organization, and will be selected by event participants. Prizes for participants include multiple copies of the new Call of Duty: Ghost, gift cards, and free food!
